Martin was born in Aintree, Liverpool. He is married to Claire, daughter of trainer William Muir and has two children, Joseph 17 and Daisy 14. Martin began his career at the age of 15, when he started working for trainer Ian Balding. He finished runner-up in the apprentice jockeys’ championship in 1996 and six years later notched up an impressive tally of 106 winners. His first Group 1 victory came aboard Casual Look in the 2003 Oaks. Since then he has gone on to be one of the most successful riders in the UK and Internationally with multiple Group and Group 1 successes including the Derby on Sir Percy. He has won Flat Ride of the Year at the Professional Jockeys’ Association Awards twice - for winning the Jockey Club Cup on Persian Punch in 2003 and for that Derby-winning ride upon Sir Percy three years later. Martin has had an extremely successfully association with Brian Meehan Racing for over 10 years.
